“The HourQuest gave me a sense of getting closer to community service. Rather than getting one easy hour, I had to fulfill a challenge and do lobbying that would make me write to the city councilor of my city about transportation safety (Ed Driggs) on issues I was witnessing in Ardrey Kell, such as no shade protection or heat protection for students waiting for pickup from buses. Even though this issue was bearable initially, I began noticing the same trend when I was waiting at CLT uptown train stations after practice. Hence, I made a step towards giving voice to an issue I know and experience in CLT almost every day through HourQuest.”

“I originally joined HourQuest because I was looking for something I could do between classes without committing to a whole afternoon of volunteering. One of the challenges involved creating activity materials for people receiving care, and I honestly didn't think something that simple would be particularly useful. But while putting the pages together, I started thinking about how much time patients probably spend just waiting around, especially when they don't have family visiting. I ended up spending a lot more time on it than I planned because I wanted the activities to actually be enjoyable. It was nice knowing I could contribute something without having to be physically present at a hospital.”

“Before HourQuest, I used to think volunteering meant going somewhere to help people or donating things, which isn't always possible for students like us. I joined because some of my friends were participating, and I wanted to see what the challenges were about. The environmental challenges interested me most because issues like rubbish and plastic waste are things we see around our communities every day. I remember working on one activity and realizing that I had never really thought about what happens to all the waste after people throw it away. I liked that we were being asked to think about problems around us instead of just reading about them in school. It made volunteering feel like something I could actually take part in.”
